Mount Robert Road, St Arnaud
The Mount Robert Circuit undoubtedly offers some of the best views of Nelson Lakes National Park.
The loop track takes in a diverse array of scenery, from rugged mountain ranges to alpine tussocks and glacial lakes. It combines the Paddy and Pinchgut Track in an accessible and achievable circuit from the village of St Arnaud.
As you zigzag up the steep face of Mount Robert, you’ll be sheltered by the canopy of regenerating beech and kanuka forest. Nearing the summit, trees make way for alpine herb fields and low-lying shrubs, revealing stunning and uninterrupted views of Lake Rotoiti. Leaving behind the vistas of the forest-fringed glacial basin, continue up to Relax Shelter before connecting with Paddy’s Track to descend back to the carpark. A path just past the shelter also provides access to the Robert Ridge Route, the most commonly used route by visitors to Lake Angelus.
How to get there: Depending on where you want to start your journey, you can access Pinchgut Track from the Mount Robert Carpark or Paddy’s Track approximately 500m before you reach the carpark.
