Elephant Rock
Abel Tasman Coast Track
At the northern end of Anchorage in the Abel Tasman National Park, you’ll find another of Nelson Tasman’s much-loved (but less-known) rock stars.
The formation, dubbed Elephant Rock, is accessible at low tide and is nestled inconspicuously into the granite coastline.
While from afar it appears there is simply a giant rock here, an archway carved out by the tide appears to have a baby elephant sheltering inside. It is just big enough to accommodate a photo opportunity with the elephant.
How to get there: Anchorage is accessible via boat, water taxi, and kayak trips into the Abel Tasman National Park, or it can be reached by foot along the Abel Tasman Coast Track (approx. 4 hours from the Mārahau carpark).
