You’ll find New Zealand’s oldest fully preserved street in Nelson City. South Street's cobblestone paths, quaint Victorian cottages, lantern streetlights, planter boxes, and white picket fences are an ode to Nelson’s unique history.

Building began on South Street (previously known as ‘Town Acre 456’) in the 1860s, and over time, wooden cottages added outhouses and porches, which still remain today.

Residents estimate that about 200 people wander down South Street every day, intrigued by its historic charm. While the interiors of the cottages are allowed to be modernised, any external restoration has to be in keeping with the street's character, such as a fresh lick of paint or a repair of the roof shingles.
