Established in the late 19th century, Wai-Iti Reserve has long been a favourite day trip destination from Nelson, easily accessible by rail since 1872. Originally managed by its own trustees, it came under local authority control in the 1980s. Today, Wai-Iti continues to delight visitors with its recreational offerings, now including night sky viewing.
Thanks to the Top of the South Dark Sky Committee, Wai-Iti hosts sidewalk astronomy events and star parties, engaging the community in dark sky preservation. Come and enjoy the serene beauty of Wai-Iti Reserve, whether for a daytime outing or an evening under the stars.
