Whisky Falls, St Arnaud 7072
Lake Rotoiti is the main access point for many of the walks that dissect the Nelson Lakes National Park, including the Travers-Sabine Circuit and Lake Angelus, but many of the area’s ‘hidden gems’ are actually within easy reach of the lake itself, including Whisky Falls.
The cascading waterfall nestled in the depths of the forest is well worth the 5-hour return trek around the lakes edge, but the walk is easily shortened to just 15 minutes when catching a boat to the nearby jetty. Manuka, kanuka and beech forest dips in and out of the lakeside setting, before emerging at a rocky viewpoint where you can admire the beauty of Whisky Falls from afar, as it thunders 40m down a mossy rockface.
