Nestled along the Ruby Coast, Māpua is a peaceful haven where stunning coastal views meet vibrant local culture. Wander through boutique shops, explore charming art galleries, and enjoy waterfront dining in this hidden gem of Nelson Tasman.
In 1901 the name Māpua was chosen for the township and signifies ‘abundance’ or ‘prolific’. Māpua has many wāhi tapu (sacred sites) and was known by iwi as Kōrepo, which refers to the abundant mahinga kai (food gathering places) of the area. Other earlier names are Te Kororā and Tū Auau.
Māpua Wharf has pedestrian-only areas that give it a relaxed and continental feel as you wander around the old cool-store buildings that once serviced a fruit shipping port and are now home to galleries, restaurants, ice creameries and gift shops.
Connect to Tasman's Great Taste Trail and Rabbit Island via a seasonal cycle ferry. The trail is perfect for families, with easy half-day trips and flexible options from local cycle hire and transport businesses. Enjoy stunning views and sample local food and drink as you ride along the coastal and urban sections.
It has lovely beaches, picnic spots, cafes, galleries and sculptures to tempt you to stop along the way. The Ruby Coast gets its name from the deep red pebbles that underlie the sandy beach – take a stroll along the waterfront and see if you can spot them.
If you’re here at Easter time, the Mapua Easter Fair is an unmissable feast of local crafts, arts, and artisan food and drinks. There are plenty of accommodation options in this part of the region if you’re keen on relaxing and enjoying the sights. As with everything in our region, Māpua and Ruby Coast are best enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
