The river, commonly known as the Maitai River flows through Nelson (Whakatū) and is the largest in the city.
It boasts numerous picnic and swimming spots, including Black Hole (pictured), Dennes Hole, Sunday Hole, Sharlands Hole, the Maitai Reserve and Smith's Ford. Nine kilometres up the river is the Maitai Dam, Nelson's main water supply.
